Keystage 8&9

The Cambridge Lower Secondary Programme provides a natural progression for children from primary education and builds on and develops their knowledge and skills with a special focus in Mathematics, English and Science. It offers a curriculum framework for educational success for learners, typically 11-14 years old, with an assessment testing structure similar to Cambridge Primary; Progression Tests and Cambridge Checkpoint tests.

Learners on this stage and onwards have specialist teachers for each of their
subjects. The subjects that students take in Key Stage 3 are: English as Second Language, Math, General Science, Computer, Thai, Physical education, Music, Art, Thai History & Japanese.

Subjects

English as a Second Language (ESL) is taught using educational materials that are always in English, but the vocabulary, grammar, and context clues may be modified to be more easily understood by students with varying levels of comprehension. Adapting comprehension, insight-oriented repetitions and recasts are some of the methods used in training. The ESL program is generally geared towards students who want to move to English-speaking countries or who do not intend to move but who want to understand English content for the purposes of education, entertainment, employment or conducting international business.

Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language offers learners the opportunity to develop practical communication skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Learners will be presented with a variety of stimuli that will build up their skills in reading and writing. Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language will enable learners to become independent users of English, and to be able to use English to communicate effectively in a variety of practical contexts.

Importance of reading in ESL instruction

According to some English professionals, reading for pleasure is an important component in the teaching of both native and foreign languages:

“Studies that sought to improve writing by providing reading experiences in place of grammar study or additional writing practice found that these experiences were as beneficial as, or more beneficial than, grammar study or extra writing practice.”

Cambridge Key Stage 8 & 9 Progression Tests provide detailed information about the performance of each learner for stages 7, 8 and 9 of the curriculums. The tests help teachers to compare the strengths and weaknesses of individuals and groups and share feedback with learners and parents. They are marked by teachers in your school and come with a unique reporting and analysis tool.

Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint Mathematics tests skills, knowledge and understanding at the end of the programme. Tests are marked in Cambridge to provide an international benchmark of learner performance. Feedback reports show how a learner has performed in relation to the curriculum, their learning group, the whole school, and against all learners who have taken tests in that series around the world.
